Many patients diagnosed with brain cancer will need to undergo surgery to remove the tumor as part of their treatment plan. Surgery is the first choice of treatment for brain cancer because it is known to be the most successful and effective method. The most common surgical procedure for brain cancer treatment is referred to as a craniotomy. During a craniotomy, the surgeon attempts to excise as much of the patient's brain tumor as they possibly can without causing too much damage to surrounding tissues and structures. In some cases, the tumor cannot be removed entirely without producing too much damage to nearby vital tissues. After a partial brain tumor removal procedure, other methods of brain cancer treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy can be used to treat the tumor further. Even if the craniotomy does not remove all of a patient's brain cancer, it still helps reduce the amount of pressure being placed on surrounding brain tissues by the tumor.
