Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma grows slowly. It does not often spread to other parts of the body, though it is possible. Cases of this type of skin cancer begin in the top layer of the skin. The uncontrolled growth of these cells will often cause a red, crusty, and scaly patch of skin to develop.

The same issues trigger squamous cell carcinoma, including the overuse of tanning beds and exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays. This is why every individual needs to wear sunscreen each day and re-apply every two hours or so. Not doing this dramatically increases their risk of getting this skin cancer.

Treatment for squamous cell carcinoma includes the standard chemotherapy and radiation. Many doctors will also consider cryotherapy, curettage, and medicated creams. Excising the affected skin is also sometimes an option.
