Types of Employer Health Insurance Plans

Most employer-sponsored health insurance plans fall into one of several categories:

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): Requires members to use a network of doctors and hospitals. It often has lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs but less flexibility in choosing providers.
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): Offers more flexibility in selecting healthcare providers and does not require a referral to see a specialist. However, it usually comes with higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
  • Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO): Similar to an HMO but allows you to see specialists without a referral. It requires you to use the network for coverage.
  • Point of Service (POS): Combines features of HMO and PPO plans, offering flexibility in choosing providers with varying costs.
